Step 7: Highlights

(You may notice that the final picture has the hair drawn with tablet instead of using the results of the demonstration from the last section.  This way, you can compare between the two methods.)

Highlights are a rather free and easy part of the picture.  The main thing here is to be careful not to overdo the lightening so that every highlight becomes white.  Shiny, smooth objects can of course have a bright highlight, but I'm sure the objects in your picture are made up of various materials that aren't always so reflective, such as fabric and skin.

Depending on your style and the colors you choose, you can use a variety of layers to accomplish this task.  Screen, Overlay, and Soft Light can all be effective modes for highlighting, so just try things out until you find the best effect for your picture.  Here is a comparison of the ways I can achieve similar highlight effects with different kinds of layers.

Depending on the color and material of your object, you may want to place the highlight layer on top of the outline layer, so that it looks like the bright reflected light is obscuring some of the object's sharp detail.  This effect is up to you as you see fit.
